When it comes to Mother’s Day, I leave the card-making to the experts at Hallmark Gold Crown. However, as a DIY’er to the very core, I find it hard to resist adding my own personal stamp on the card so that it’s 100% uniquely tailored to my Mom!

With May 8th just around the corner, I thought I’d share some mini DIY ideas for making store-bought cards extra personal for Mother’s Day, as well as thoughtful gift pairings from Hallmark Gold Crown to round out the celebration. (Hallmark’s Mother’s Day Gift Guide makes it easy!) If you, too, are looking for fresh and simple ways to help Mom feel the love this year, these store-bought card hacks are for you! Let’s get crafting…3 Ways to Personalize Store Bought Cards for Mother's Day | Francois et Moi

DIY #1: Add a Patterned Liner to the Card’s Envelope

Pick up some pretty patterned gift wrap along with your Mother’s Day card (I’m really loving this Sugar & Cloth Happy Banner Card!), and make a fast and simple liner for the envelope. Then pair the embellished card with a bouquet of flowers and a beautiful lattice tray for Mom. Easy, pretty & thoughtful!

1. Gather Materials: Hallmark Signature Card, Polka Dot Gift Wrap, Envelope Liner Template, Double-Sided Tape, Scissors, Pencil, Printer

2. Print & cut out the envelope liner template. Position the template on the gift wrap and trace.

3. Cut out the liner.

4. Apply double-sided tape along the flap edges on the backside of the liner.

5. Insert the liner into the envelope and carefully line up the flap edges. Press liner down to adhere to the envelope.

DIY #2: Include a Printable Gift Voucher in the Card

Invite Mom to a Girls’ Day Out activity such as mani-pedis with a printable accordion-style voucher, and round out the spa theme with artisan-made soaps, candles and hand creme from Crafters & Co (which smell amazing BTW!).

1. Print and cut out the Mother’s Day Voucher. For the striped backing, before cutting out the voucher, flip the paper over and run the backside through the printer with the Striped Backing Printable.

2. Fill out the activity you’d like to treat Mom to. Then fold accordion style and tuck into your card. I love the way the voucher clips right in to the Sugar & Cloth Signature Clipboard Card!

DIY #3. Address the Card Envelope with Fancy Calligraphy

Take Mom’s gift to the next level by addressing the envelope with scripty font. (It’s easier than you think!) Then set Mom up with a journal and calligraphy nib so you guys can practice your technique together!

1. Gather Materials: Calligraphy Pen & Ink, Hallmark Greeting Card, Practice Paper, Pencil, Ruler

Draw horizontal pencil guidelines about 3/4″-1″ apart on practice paper.

2. There are two main strokes to master when writing calligraphy: a thick, downward motion stroke achieved by applying ample pressure on the calligraphy nib as you move the pen down across the paper, and a thin, upward motion stroke achieved with very light pressure on the nib as you move up across the paper.

Dip the nib in ink deep enough to cover the hole on the top of the nib. For right-handed folks, hold the pen so the hole on the nib is facing upward and slightly to the left. Vice versa for lefties.  Remember that you do not change the position of the nib, only the amount of pressure you apply as you move the nib up and down across the paper.

Start by practicing a row of thick, downward strokes on the practice paper guidelines. Apply ample pressure on the nib as you move from the top guideline to the bottom guideline.

3. Next practice a row of thin strokes. Apply light pressure as you move the nib from the bottom guideline to the top guideline.

4. Now combine the two strokes together! Begin practicing Mom’s name and address on practice paper by lightly marking out the details in pencil to work out any spacing issues.

5. Then go over the pencil lines with ink, and as soon as it dries, go back and erase any visible pencil lines.  Practice the name and address on practice paper several times until you feel ready to move to the card’s envelope.

6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 on the actual envelope.
