‘Tis the Ski-son: DIY Après Ski Sweater

 a·près-ski  |  äprā ˈskē/   |   noun   |   the social activities and entertainment following a day’s skiing.

Ken and I are heading up North for our annual ski getaway next weekend, so naturally I’ve had all things ski on the brain lately.  The Francophile in me went NUTS for this Après Ski sweater, but apparently everyone else did too because the smaller sizes are completely sold out. Not to mention it’s a men’s sweater so even if S or XS was available, chances are it would be too big.

Never one to let a sold-out roadblock stop me, I decided I’d just make myself one. $20 and 20 minutes later, I’m ready to hit the slopes in true Francophile style. Read on for details below!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

MAKE IT IN 5 EASY STEPS:

  1. Cut the clear plastic sheeting around each letter needed to spell “après ski.”
  2. Heat your iron on the wool setting without steam.
  3. While the iron is heating, center the “après” letters (adhesive side down) on the front of the sweatshirt about 2″ down from the bottom of the collar’s “V” notch. Press the iron firmly on the letters for about 60 seconds. Pay special attention to corners and edges. Then flip the sweatshirt over and iron the letters from the backside for about 10 seconds.
  4. Next center the “ski” letters about 1″ below the “après.” Repeat the ironing process from above on the “ski” letters.
  5. Allow the letters and fabric to cool completely and then carefully pull off the plastic backing. The letters should be adhered to the fabric. If they pull up with the plastic backing, lay the backing back down, and re-iron with a good amount of pressure.

Notes: The instructions that come with the letters say the garment can be machine washed, but I’d stick with handwashing on this one to be safe!
