Timber Side Table DIY

I recently heard that studies show renters (though it’s a must have on their checklist) don’t actually use their unit balconies, which surprised me because Ken and I have always used the heck out of the balcony in all the places we’ve lived.

This Spring we’ve been working on making our balcony into an extension of our living room as it’s connected by GIANT sliding doors. So the moment it warmed up we’ve been opening the door and letting the rooms flow as one. And in a 620 sf apartment, it makes a huge spacial impact!

DIY Timber Side Table | Francois et MoiI’d been ogling this side table on Pinterest and had a feeling we could make one for our balcony out of a pressure treated (outdoor grade) heavy timber so I recruited Ken to help me make it happen and I LOVE the way it turned out. The key power tool here is the belt sander as it smooths out a multitude of sins: unlevel legs, uneven top, and of course, any rough edges.

I love this! Would you please provide a bit more detail on how you made the cuts. For example, when you cut the first 20-inch section off the long timber, did you have to make multiple passes through the 6 x 6 to do so? I’m assuming the blade size on the saw meant that you couldn’t cut through the timber in one pass, so I’m just wondering how exactly to go about this. Similarly, did you have to make multiple cuts for the angled cuts on each of the legs? Thanks so much!
