Our {Pre-Baby} Mini Bedroom Makeover

There are a ton of changes that take place when you’re expecting. Major physical changes, extra dietary requirements, and feeling a bit up-in-the-clouds spacey (it’s true!), to name a few. So far, I’ve been  rolling with all of it, and then my sleep pattern began to change, and I started becoming restless at night, mostly from having to sleep on my side. I’ve always been a great sleeper, so when things started to go downhill, I decided we needed to do something about it. We need all the sleep we can get before this bébé arrives!

Our bedroom was one of the spaces in our home that didn’t get a ton of love when we moved in about a year ago. We pretty much plopped our furniture in place and focused on the more immediate changes we needed to make elsewhere in the home, a.k.a. the kitchen. However, now that we’re expecting, I spend more time in our bedroom, and want to make it a cozy space conducive to sleep.

With a nursery and guestroom redesign already underway, our bedroom updates didn’t come in the form of paint and carpet removal (which is on the honey-do list for someday). Instead, they’re more about styling out this bare, forgotten space to make curling up for bedtime more enjoyable.

Probably the biggest change we made in terms of creating a better night sleep was in our mattress. We previously had a run-of-the-mill spring-loaded mattress which worked okay prior to pregnancy, but now it just wasn’t cutting it. We decided to upgrade to a GelFoam Mattress given their pressure-sensitive Serene Foam technology. Enhanced with billions of microscopic air capsules, Serene Foam is proven to increase self-adjusting support while simultaneously reducing pressure on key areas of the body.

As an expecting mother, my OB recommended sleeping on my left side to avoid the strain on internal organs that sleeping on your back or right side can sometimes take on your body. On the old mattress, no way. There was no way to sleep on my left side the entire night without constantly tossing over due to the pressure put on my left hip. With GelFoamBed though, I sleep through the night on my left side, no problem! The mattress just kind of hugs you as you lay down, all the while providing firm support so you can get a good night sleep. Needless to say, I’m loving it.

Another reason I love GelFoamBed is the eco factor: The mattress arrives rolled up super tightly, which means it uses less packing material and takes up less space on the delivery truck, resulting in an overall smaller carbon footprint.

Normally I hate allocating budget to non-decorative things that you don’t actually see, but in this case, it’s SO worth it. It’s so worth sleeping through the night, waking up refreshed, and being my most productive self during the day. If you’re also in the market for a new mattress, take a look at GelFoamBed. The other updates we made were hanging drapery, updating the bedding and throw pillows to help soften the space and dilute those beige walls. The drapery is from Ikea a few years ago, that had been stored away since the move. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they’re available anymore, so I’ve included a similar panel style in the “Get the Look” section below.

We also added a nightstand on the far side of the bed. The door you see in the photo is a tiny under-stairs closet for occasionally accessed storage, so we felt okay with a nightstand there. All three bedrooms in our home are small by today’s standards, but typically sized for a 1930’s home, so you do what you gotta do to make the space work for you! Last but not least, we flanked the bed with matching lamps with fabric shades that give off the most serene glow just before bed.
