Ideas and inspiration for finding affordable, chic, and Earth-friendly Halloween decor! Add some fun festivity to your home without breaking the bank!

I must admit, I didn’t get into Halloween decorating until my kids came along. They make every Holiday more fun, don’t you think? And though I’m now team ‘Halloween Decorating’, I don’t think I’ll ever be team ‘Spend a Fortune’. And finding a way to be Earth-friendly is definitely a priority. So how do I keep Halloween decorations, affordable and sustainable? Thrifting!

Thrift stores tend to really shine this time of year because they receive a lot of kitschy clothing and Halloween costumes as donations, and by nature, their goods–everything from home accessories to crafts to books–naturally lean quirky and one of a kind. Perfect for Halloween!

When thrifting for Halloween decor, here are my suggestions:

  • Go Early! Start in September, if you think of it. Stores are likely always putting new pieces out, but it goes without saying, having the first pass is always best!
  • Exhaust All Departments: I check out everything from home decor, faux florals, craft supplies and hardcover books. You never know what you’ll find, so I check everywhere!
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Dig! By only scanning the shelves, you won’t see everything. Lift pieces up and move things around to see what might happen to be hiding non-chalantly at the back!

Halloween Home Decor Styling:

My Halloween style tends to lean more subtle than scary, so I look for less quintessential decor like: hand sculptures or busts, cloches, old science books with anatomy diagrams, and candles, candles candles! You can’t beat the thrill of the hunt!

I use Halloween pieces to accentuate everyday decor, and this year, I took the liberty of dressing up my husband’s walleye replica as a pirate. No one should have to see at that fish’s eye, I don’t care how creepy this Holiday is!

  • Cloches are perfect for display curious objects.
  • Tall vases are great for large-scale branches. The wavy ribbed vase paired with maple leaf branches was $1.99!
  • Candles are a must for that ominous glow!

I scored this epic bronze bust (above) on shopgoodwill.com and found the handmade-looking broom for Halloween last year (also above).

Thrifting is truly where the magic happens! I hope you picked up a few tips here, if not only for Halloween, but shopping secondhand all year round. Happy (decor) hunting and haunting!
