Francois Renovates: Living & Dining Room Before & After

This post is part of a larger series, Francois Renovates. Find the other posts in this series Here, Here & Here.

With the Fall hullabaloo of DIY renovating, moving, and then the Holidays, it’s been quite a slow process getting our home set up and settled. To make insult to injury, I can’t just hang something on the wall or go out and buy a piece of furniture because we “need” something there. It has to be the right piece which definitely takes time to find (and drives my husband bonkers!).

I’d like to start with the “Before” because who doesn’t love a good Before & After situation? Below are the photos from the listing when we purchased back in July. (Photos courtesy of Zillow.) As you can see, the space is in great shape, but a little gloomy and a few two many competing wood tones for my liking.

Living & Dining Room Renovation Reveal: Before & After

And now on to the “After.”

I snapped all these shots on a whim in late December after I was approached about opening our home for a brand’s photo shoot. I struggle with sharing these just yet, because I don’t feel like this room is completely done. We still need window treatments, a rug in the dining room, etc., but after looking through the before and after shots, I realized just how far we’ve come since July. And let’s be honest, no room is ever truly finished, right? We’re always tweaking!

I went back and forth with whether to include these shots below with the TV, but in order to give full sense of the space, I had to include them. This is our main living area where we spend most of our time. We’re real people who watch TV–mostly movies–but nonetheless, the TV is part of our living space. Eventually, we’d love to add a fireplace here with built-in window seats flanking the fireplace. (Won’t that be lovely?!) As I mentioned above, we also need window treatments, but I can’t, for the life of me, find affordable natural woven shades that come standard to fit a 25″ wide window. Anyone have any leads?

The paint color used throughout the house is Benjamin Moore ‘White.’ Just plain ‘ol white. We used an eggshell finish for the walls and satin for the trim. The oak hardwood flooring was refinished before we bought the home, so I don’t know the finish, but it appears just to be a clear finish.

Eventually I’d love to refinish the dining table white (go figure! #paintitwhite) and restore the copper foot caps on the pedestal legs. All in good time though!

So that’s the status on the living & dining room . Up next, I’ll be sharing progress on the kitchen and upstairs apartment (our home is a duplex!)

I have these blinds and adore them – they are absolutely gorgeous in person – a nice modern dark stain. And they are available in 25″ width!

Is the rug more true to color in your photos than on the website listing? It’s potentially the perfect rug for our soon-to-be nursery 🙂

      Hi Caitlin!
First of all, Congratulations!! Each rug is slightly different, so I can’t say for absolute sure, but I do remember when I bought my rug, the photos were quite yellow and looked similar to these. It was so much more gorgeous in person when it arrived!

Where did you get your pallet? Is it an original or did you have it made? We are going to have one made. I love the look.

Hi Diana! The pallet cart is an old cart from a North Carolina furniture factory. I think there are some great tutorials out there though to make them. Good luck! XO

gorgeous! love the dark rug with the white walls. so pretty. also, i think home depot will cut down any woven shade to the exact size you need it. most say on the package if they can be trimmed or not. good luck!

It’s a Broyhill Sectional from a local place in MN called Becker’s Furniture World.
