Simple ways to throw a modern chic gathering that’s thoughtful, but not stuffy. If you’re hosting Thanksgiving, you’ve got to read!
So you’re hosting Thanksgiving and looking for ways to make it feel thoughtful, but not stuffy? This post was written exactly for you! Whenever I have people over, I’m striving to make things feel special and tasteful, but not like I’m trying too hard. And it’s a hard balance to strike! So I’ve put together eight Do’s and Don’ts or things to consider for a modern, chic gathering. It’s written with Thanksgiving in mind, but it easily translates over to Christmas and any gathering really. Hope you find this helpful!
Skip Formal Place Settings
They’re stuffy and old fashioned! Instead, set out stacks of dishes for guests to dig in and seat themselves.
Use Your Everyday Dishes, Silverware, Etc. to Elevate the Vibe
None of this disposable dinnerware/serveware business. It’s less waste and way more chic. On the opposite end of the spectrum, don’t feel obligated to bust out your wedding china either. Your everyday dinnerware is effortless and homey.
Do Use Specialty Drinkware
Do use any fun drink glasses you might have on hand, like cut crystal or coupes for cocktails/mocktails.
Make Your Fave Recipes and Leave the Rest to the Pros
We all have our key favorite recipes that we’ve made before so we know they’re crowd-pleasers. Make those favorites, and leave the rest of the cooking time and hard work to the experts, like Keg & Case. Just make sure you check to see when you need to place your orders by. Beyond your favorite recipes, another easy thing to throw together is the charcuterie board. You just buy things and arrange on a plate.
Don’t Forget Florals and Candles on the Table
They’re instant ambiance makers! Stick to low slung bouquets that won’t block conversations across the table. My florist friend Molly of Studio Emme creates stunning (pre-order-able) fall foliage bouquets to help take the guesswork/legwork out of the centerpiece. Pair with tea lights or taper candles and you’re good to go!
Set Out Your Working Menu in the Kitchen
In a small way, it allows guests a look into your thought process for the meal.
If guests ask to bring something, take them up on it!
People who offer to bring something want to feel involved or that they’re contributing in some way.
Use Cheesecloth for Table Linens
Cheesecloth is an unexpected, textural alternative to standard linen and is super affordable!
So there you have it! You’re all set. Now go rock that modern, chic gathering of yours!
