Updating a dated builder home can pose quite the conundrum. Come see our plan for transforming the Treehouse’s master bedroom. Spoiler: it’s gonna be good!
Since wrapping up the Treehouse living room we’ve turned our sights to the master bedroom, and I couldn’t be more excited. Truthfully, I forgot to snap pictures of the room once my parents had moved in, so here is the room staged for the seller’s listing.
The Room
As you guys know, the house is built on a hill and has three decks in back that look out on lake and forest. The master bedroom is lucky enough to open out onto one of those three decks! The room is a nice size, with great vaulted ceilings and lots of natural light coming though the doors.
The wall color is ok, but this room feels gloomy even on sunny days, there are these cheapo sconces that flank the bed and don’t get me started on the 1/2 drapery rod (??). LOL.
The previous owner had the bed on the wall opposite the doors so you could potentially lay in bed and take in the view. In theory it works, but in reality, the room just feels really small when you walk in, and the bed is definitely not the focal point. We’re going to move the bed to the blank wall so that it becomes the clear focal point in here.
Inspiration & Direction
My mom wants to use the home’s natural surroundings (lake, forest, etc.) as the inspiration in the room, and I think that’s a fantastic idea. Earthy blues + greens, quieted by warm neutrals will take center stage in here.
The blue and green lumbar pillow (pictured below) from St. Frank was actually THE first piece I found for the room and everything else came together from there.
Rattan Sconces | Rug | Upholstered Bed Frame | Nightstands | Bench | Mirror | Lounge Chair | Floor Lamp | Vintage Art | Sheepskin | Rice Paper Pendant | Drapery | Kantha Quilt | Linen Duvet | Linen Shams | Sheets | Striped Throw Pillow | Lumbar Pillow
Our family is Scandinavian so Nordic design influences are definitely something we want to incorporate, as well as mix in a little Mid-Century as my mom is forever an MCM girl.
After defining our color palette and overall design direction, we turned our sights towards rugs. Initially, we were going to go with a quiet textured rug to speak to the Nordic aesthetic, but my mom was responding so well to vintage-style Persian rugs. For years she’s told me “her colors” are ‘persimmon, muted teal, and spring green’, so when we came across the Loren Rug from Loloi, it was an unspoken ‘YES’ from both of us.
In terms of the room’s upholstered pieces, Article‘s Refresh Campaign for 2020, which is all about removing inefficiencies and clutter, spoke directly to this room’s soul. Focusing on natural materials, balancing neutrals with moments of earthy color, mixing wood tones, and celebrating Mid Century and Nordic design styles. BOOM. It kind of hits the nail, smack-dab-directly on the head!
When it comes to bedrooms, textiles/bed linens are super important as they can make or break how well we sleep. Because of the informality of the Treehouse, I’m looking at french linen bedding from Bokser Home, with it’s dry hand that perpetually softens with each wash.
So that’s where we’re headed with the master bedroom! We’ve already begun painting in here, and I cannot wait for our next update. I hope you’ll come along as we work some magic in here!
As an aside, the nightstands we’re using are unfortunately already sold out, but you an sign up to be notified when they’re back in stock via the image on the left below. I’m also linking to two similar nightstand options below too in case they tickle your fancy
Nordic End Table // More Mid-Century Tables | Conrad End Table // More End + Side Tables | Fahey Nightstand // More Nightstands |
