Francois et Moi’s tagline, Handmade Modern Home, is not only about getting our hands dirty and DIY-ing one-of-a-kind pieces for our homes. It’s equally about celebrating expert artisans and feathering a conscious home rooted in soul and intention. Today we’re combining the best of both worlds–I’m teaming up with KUFRI Life Fabrics on a bench cushion project that has the most fab details… Let’s start with the fabric, shall we? KUFRI creates the most luxe hand-woven textiles that expertly balance rustic texture and refined sensibility. Woven by artisans in India, each yard is as individual as the maker who created it. The inspiration for the bench cushion was born from my infatuation with deconstructed design details. Like this one, this one, and this one, for example. I’ve introduced a little of this flavor to the DIY bench we made last year as a way of softening its strong clean lines. (Go HERE for the DIY Bench tutorial.) KUFRI’s Spring 2018 collection launched a few weeks ago, and the moment I saw pattern REX in the Grey colorway, I knew its small-scale soft pattern, and organic texture would be the perfect counterpart. The cushion has an envelope closure on […]

Ah, behold the latent design power of the throw pillow. AKA soft little squares (or in this case, circles) of goodness that can single-handedly change the feeling or direction of a room, spark conversation, or soften an otherwise uninviting chair or nook. Yes folks, they’re magic when it comes to interior decor which is why they’re the easy answer to updating your space just enough to cure the restless, “I’m sick of my house” cabin fever that inevitably sets in this time of year. And if ever there were a pillow up to the task of stealing the spotlight and diverting attention away from the rest of your home, its this little wool beaded trim pillow you can make in an afternoon. Now if you’re really feeling adventurous, you can make your own felt beads, but I picked mine up here because, TIME. The rest of the materials I found at the fabric/craft store. Head over to Sugar & Cloth to find my full tutorial! Think this post is worth a read? Please share the love!

When I think of cross-stitch needlepoint, my mind goes to that of my Grandmother’s craft and in no way modern & textural. But this project is here to change all that and (hopefully) help us rethink the art of cross-stitch. It’s a needlepoint seat cushion made with a rug hooking grid + super chunky yarn and the finished result is a deliciously textural surface that’s perfect for softening bare accent or dining chairs. If like me, you love the Mid Century style and a good thrift store find now and again, then maybe you won’t think I’m crazy when I tell you I purchased this old beat up chair that was missing it’s cushion and had structural issues, annnnd I couldn’t have been more stoked about my score! Now before you send me straight to the nut house, hear me out. The chair was a Mid Century diamond in the rough rattan occasional chair that cost me $4–Yep, four $1 bills–at the North Loop Salvation Army. As for those structural issues? Nothin’ a DIY gal like myself couldn’t fix! Of course, what I hadn’t accounted for was how I’d style the chair in my home–I just saw it, picked […]

One of the ways I shrug off those I’m-over-winter blues this time of year is by switching out small accessories in my home, like pillows, to help it feel a bit less wintery. So today I want to share these easy little tufted pillows I created for Sugar and Cloth which are perfect for infusing spring vibes into the home. Usually when I hear the word ‘tufting’ I run the other way because the word tufting just sounds complex, right? Well never fear, though these pillows are technically tufted, they each just have one giant tuft in the middle so they’re actually ridiculously easy. Yay! And there’s also no zipper, so Double Yay! Head over and say hi to Ashley for the tutorial. Tomorrow I’ll be sharing tips for choosing the right inserts for throw pillows, so make sure to check back! DIY Button Tufted Pillows Looking for more DIY pillow inspiration?
