Amidst our nursery redesign, I spent an embarrassing amount of time looking for Nordic wallpapers. I knew we wanted to take the nursery in a Scandinavian direction, and wallpaper is just such an easy way to introduce it. As you probably have seen, we chose Nethercote from Hygge & West for our nursery. Though the design is “technically” English-inspired, it still feels very Nordic, and it’s honestly the PERFECT paper for Sylvia’s room. If you’re also looking to add a little Nordic accent to your home, hopefully I can save you some precious Pinterest surfing time by rounding up the papers I fell in love along the way… a.

It’s my absolute pleasure to share with you the newly completed nursery of brand strategist & the brains behind Luxe + Lillies, Keely Hirschmann. Keely and I first connected through Instagram and bonded over our 1-month-apart due dates + a mutual love for crisp, minimal design. She’s the kind of person, where 5 minutes into meeting her, you feel like you’ve already been friends your entire life. One afternoon over lunch in late December, she showed me an iPhone snap of how her nursery was coming together, and my knee jerk response was to ask if I could share the space on Francois et Moi. I love the minimalist approach Keely took with clean, white walls and furnishings, balanced with natural textures and playful accents. What a lucky baby, wouldn’t you say? I hope you have as much fun as I have exploring the nursery and learning a bit about Keely and her design inspiration for the room! First up, tell us a little bit about your brand-strategy background and blog: Luxe + Lillies? How did you get into brand-strategy? What do you hope readers take away from your site? I started Luxe + Lillies what feels like ages ago […]

Good Afternoon! I’m back with an update on what’s been happening in the nursery. As you know, we suspected some water damage on the west wall due to decades of ice dams, and as we pulled back the lath and plaster, we found some extremely rotted, uninsulated 2×4’s that needed replacing. However, no moisture or signs of mold as there was also a little hole in the exterior plaster that we’re assuming allowed everything to dry over the years. The plan was to replace the wall’s 2×4’s, insulate and dry wall, but before we could get started, we had to address the drooping ceiling crest. You see, since the wall joists had rotted, the ceiling joists, though still in great, non water-damaged condition began to droop slightly in this area. In an effort to jack the ceiling back up, Ken built a fake “dummy” wall about 12″ from the exterior wall, and then, one by one, replaced each of the vertical 2×4’s (on the dummy wall) with slightly longer pieces by pounding them into place, and thereby lifting the ceiling. He did a couple rounds of this in order to get the ceiling as high as he could. We had […]

Okay guys, you’ve seen the before photos, and now you’re probably wondering what the heck we have planned for this space! Here’s a breakdown of the scope of the project: Address bowing ceiling and ice damage by replacing rotted studs, insulating, and re-drywalling Add bead board substrate to ceiling Create white board and batten paneling around the lower 1/2 of the wall Un-bury original hardwood floors to address water damage // decide if we should refinish them or leave the existing carpet as is. Wallpaper upper half of the wall with playful Scandinavian inspired paper. Update ceiling light fixture. Furnish the room with classic pieces that hopefully can continue to work for us as our family grows You may be looking at the material selections for the room and thinking ‘I thought they said they were having a girl. Where’s the pink?!’ And you did hear right; we are indeed having a girl, but since neither Ken nor I are particularly keen on the color pink, we chose colors and materials that we’re drawn to, while making an effort to bring in girly accents in ways other than with pink. Of course every design starts with lots of visual research, […]

There are a ton of changes that take place when you’re expecting. Major physical changes, extra dietary requirements, and feeling a bit up-in-the-clouds spacey (it’s true!), to name a few. So far, I’ve been rolling with all of it, and then my sleep pattern began to change, and I started becoming restless at night, mostly from having to sleep on my side. I’ve always been a great sleeper, so when things started to go downhill, I decided we needed to do something about it. We need all the sleep we can get before this bébé arrives! Our bedroom was one of the spaces in our home that didn’t get a ton of love when we moved in about a year ago. We pretty much plopped our furniture in place and focused on the more immediate changes we needed to make elsewhere in the home, a.k.a. the kitchen. However, now that we’re expecting, I spend more time in our bedroom, and want to make it a cozy space conducive to sleep. With a nursery and guestroom redesign already underway, our bedroom updates didn’t come in the form of paint and carpet removal (which is on the honey-do list for someday). Instead, […]

When you purchase a home for the first time, you’re not just buying a home, you’re also in for several smaller purchases needed to either take care of your home or make it useable, like a lawn mower or maybe new accessories for a 2nd bathroom that you didn’t have when renting. Since purchasing our duplex last year, I’ve tried to put more thought into the things I’m bringing into our home, even for those everyday things like a laundry hamper. I mean if there’s a pretty, design-savvy option within your budget, then why not go for the option with some style?! I think it makes using these typically boring items more enjoyable. Not to mention, if it’s a pretty laundry hamper, then I’m more okay leaving it on display, when guests come over. (Less last minute scrambling for me when trying to hide the full plastic laundry basket!) With all this in mind, I’ve rounded up several design-driven homewares that make great alternatives to mundane daily-use items. Cheers to making our everyday just a little bit more fun! 1. Power Cable 2. Laundry Hamper 3. Japanese Scissor Set 4. Brass Towel Bar 5. Brass Strainer Set 6.

At long last! I’m sharing the details of the backyard redesign we did with Apartment Therapy. And today I’m starting with the inspiration that motivated the design. Afterall, that’s where every project begins: with an idea or notion about how a space could be better. Oui? To be 1 billion percent honest, we had a hard time finding visual imagery that captured the backyard design inspiration what we were envisioning, but eventually found a few gems that got the juices flowing! Check back this weekend as I’ll be sharing full before & after photos of the completed project! Charming Dining Patio | Terra Cotta Pots | Adirondack Fire Pit | Winding Paver Path Follow Save Save Save Save Save Save Save

This post is part of an ongoing series, Francois Renovates. Find the other posts in this series Here, Here, Here, Here & Here. Good Monday Morning! Today I’ve got the bed & bath areas of our home to share. The bulk of our updates took place in the Kitchen, Living Room & Dining Rooms, & the Upstairs Apartment, so not a ton of work has been done in these areas, shy of setting them up functionally. But, I think it’s fun seeing how other people live (because I’m nosy!), so I’m sharing the bed & bath areas of the home in case you’re anything like me! Next on my to-do list is to paint (or maybe wallpaper?!) our bedroom. It’s the same color as when we purchased the place, so I’m not sure of the color name, but I call it builder beige. While it’s innocuous, this room faces North, so I’d like to brighten the walls up in here a bit. I think Ken is enjoying the fact that it’s one of the only rooms in the house that’s not white. I, of course, feel the opposite. When in doubt, paint it white I say! The Bed […]

This post is part of a larger series, Francois Renovates. Find the other posts in this series Here, Here & Here. With the Fall hullabaloo of DIY renovating, moving, and then the Holidays, it’s been quite a slow process getting our home set up and settled. To make insult to injury, I can’t just hang something on the wall or go out and buy a piece of furniture because we “need” something there. It has to be the right piece which definitely takes time to find (and drives my husband bonkers!). I’d like to start with the “Before” because who doesn’t love a good Before & After situation? Below are the photos from the listing when we purchased back in July. Living & Dining Room Renovation Reveal: Before & After And now on to the “After.” I snapped all these shots on a whim in late December after I was approached about opening our home for a brand’s photo shoot. I struggle with sharing these just yet, because I don’t feel […]

I’m pumped today (to say the least) to share my first ever stop motion video! I’ve been wanting to try my hand at one for a few months now, because I think they’re downright fun and quirky. So as I was developing a tutorial for Homedit on how to make a set of interactive prismatic magnets, I realized the “interactive” component to the magnets make them just about the perfect project for such a video. Check out the short and sweet video below! I love how graphic and colorful the magnets turned out. They’re playful and fun for the kiddos, but also totally at home in any modern home. Head over to Homedit for the tutorial on how to make a set of Prismatic Magnets for your fridge! The song in the video is Cheerful Clapping Whistler and the video was created in Wondershare Filmora Video Editor.

Hello there and happy Friday! It’s another Homedit tutorial here on Francois et Moi today where we’ve created a striking set of X-shaped modern coasters from balsa wood and a little paint. These playful numbers were inspired by a beautiful set of brass originals. But instead of working with metal, we used a malleable wood for a quick and easy fabrication. (You can actually cut balsa wood with a scissors!) I love the graphic, minimal design, and the way they sort of make you re-think what a coaster needs to look like in order to support your glass or hot pot. Use them individually, or group them together for a trivet effect. Get all the how-to details over at Homedit! And check out more of my Homedit tutorials right here.
