Want to build a radiator cover? Learn how to create a beautiful, pre-war inspired radiator cover with our downloadable radiator cover plans! Well it’s been 2.5 years since we made this radiator cover for the foyer, I’m FINALLY sharing plans on how to create one yourself. Omg. Finally! I can’t tell you how many inquiries I’ve gotten about this project and so I’m really happy to finally get them in your hands! This is an intermediate to advanced project that requires some experience with building furniture. I’ve noted our dimensions, but of course, adjust them to your radiator size or if you don’t have radiators, perhaps build this cover as a table that gives the illusion of an old radiator in your space. We had to get a little (ok, alot!) creative, with the trim pieces on this piece. Ken spent weeks (I’m not exaggerating!) looking for a curved hardwood piece for the corners before finally going with MDF. If we could’ve done hardwood we would’ve but we’re not in the business of steam bending wood. This is the curved MDF piece we used. The radiator cover only uses 10″ total of curved or radiused corner moulding. However the only length […]

Look around the modern Tudor foyer of Erin Francois, and hear the key updates that made all the difference in their duplex entryway. I’m excited to tell you our summer-turned-fall-turned-late-fall foyer side project is finally finished!! When I think back to where we started in here with the cheap, dirty carpeted stairs and plastic runner over top, naked radiator, and beige walls, the room was functional, per se, but it didn’t make a good first impression–and that, my friends–is the first thing a foyer should do! It’s the first experience someone has in your home, and you want it to be representative of you. Needless to say, this room didn’t flow with the rest of our ‘modern Tudor’ style. However, we did love the original dark woodwork, the black slate floor the previous owner had installed, and the original front door we refinished a few years ago. Scope After nailing down the room’s design direction, we got to work on the scope: Paint all walls Behr/Home Decorators, Whisper White in eggshell finish Remove carpet/refinish stairs with Varathane, Dark Walnut to match existing woodwork. Read about the foyer mid-renovation. Install indoor/outdoor runner — Read more on our decision-making process below. Create […]

This post was sponsored by Rust-Oleum and contains affiliate links. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Continuing on with our foyer remodel, you may have caught an IG story or two of Ken and I building a radiator cover to dress up the bare heating unit in the front entry. The plans for the cover itself are coming soon (I promise!), but in the meantime, I’ve painted this bad boy, and I can hardly hold back to show you guys how it turned out! (It’s gooood.) In the past, I’ve used a paint brush application to paint furniture, but this time around, I knew I’d need to look to spray paint for the intricate metal panels of the radiator cover. I’ll admit I was a little nervous whether I would be able to apply the spray paint evenly. Ken and I worked really hard designing/building the cover, and I wanted to make sure my paint job would do it justice! I went with Rust-Oleum spray paints for this project, because I’ve been using their products for YEARS, my dad used Rust-Oleum growing up, and I always know their paint (not to mention the spray nozzle) is going to be […]

FOYER RENO! A look at the foyer BEFORE + A guided tour of the progress we’re making in this gem of an entry! You guys have seen my design vision for the foyer, but what did the actual foyer look like?! If you’re on Instagram, then you may have already seen it. I’ve been story-ing up a freaking storm. But here’s a closer look at the BEFORE of the foyer. The word ‘foyer’ sounds so fancy, right? Well our house isn’t exactly fancy. It’s a small 1930’s duplex that we own/occupy. The upstairs is an apartment + den that we rent out. (Are you sick of me explaining that yet?!) The foyer is the spot that it splits into two units. Go to the left for the door to our unit, and go up the stairs to the door to our tenant’s home. BEFORE The previous owner laid down this beige shag carpet while getting ready to sell the place 5 years ago, in an effort, no doubt, to avoid having to refinish the stairs (I totally get it–refinishing stairs is WERK!) Not ready to tackle the stairs when we first moved in, we laid this god-awful (if I do […]

Looking for ideas for radiators? We’ve compiled the chic-est ideas out there. Click through for the round up! On my quest for ideas on how to address the small, bare radiator in our foyer (see my design plan for our Modern Tudor Foyer!), I took to Pinterest in search of solutions. I think I found the answer–stay tuned to see what we decided!–and along the way I stumbled upon some other pretty great ideas that are too chic and clever not to highlight. Many are as simple as a coat of paint or adding a shelf or console table, but not without big impact. So without further ado, let’s talk radiators…or rather, how to ‘dress’ them up! Console Table How chic is this idea of incorporating a lucite console table around the radiator? I love the juxtaposition of the ornamented and visually ‘heavy’ radiator with the sleek, airy lines of the console. Très bien, n-est-ce, pas? Oh and this sweet pup doesn’t hurt this look either! wink, wink! Image Source Floating Shelf Installing a seemingly floating marble shelf above the radiator is one I’ve been seriously kicking around for our foyer. I love the minimal simplicity look and […]

Modern Tudor Foyer: Inspiration and thoughts surrounding our upcoming foyer renovation. Come weigh in on my design direction! First impressions are everything, and my foyer, in it’s current state anyway, couldn’t charm a fly! See below. Our home is wonderful, if I do say so (with great bias!), but the foyer just isn’t a great indicator of what’s beyond. As you guys know our home is a duplex. (We live on the main floor and rent out the upstairs apartment to our fan-tabulous tenants.) The foyer is the space where the duplex splits in two. Go through the door on the left for our place and up the stairs to the door of the tenant’s unit. If you’re interested in becoming a landlord or buying a duplex, read up on my I Am Landlord series! The foyer has the original wood trim/stringer which I want to keep (and not paint), but the carpet/plastic runner on the stairs has got to go! I plan to refinish the stair treads to match the existing wood trim and paint the risers white. There’s also a great opportunity to make a real focal point on the radiator wall with picture frame moulding and a […]
