Dress up your bar cart with an easy, lush asymmetrical bar cart garland you can make yourself, and while you’re at it, load up on tons of links and ideas for throwing your own Valentine’s Day gathering! How do you combat post-Holiday blues? Well, my friend, Morgan of Construction2Style, gathers friends together for an afternoon of celebrating friendship and girl power in honor of Valentine’s Day, or Galentine’s Day, if you will. She hosted an amazing brunch with highlights being chocolate dipped strawberries, heart-shaped waffles, and floral-infused lattes + cocktails. I mean, how does she dream up this jazz?! She also created a DIY Valentine-making Station for everyone to make + take, enlisted Lea of Creekwood Hill to design a paper fan photo wall, and she asked me to make a fresh greenery garland to style the bar cart. You guys know, I freaking love making garlands, so of course, I was up to the challenge! Here’s the play by play for making one for your next gathering: Materials: A mix of leafy greenery such as silver dollar eucalyptus, baby blue eucalyptus, cedar, etc. I used about 6 bunches of various greens + a half bunch of purple sprigs that […]

Love fresh garland, but hate how fast it dries out? Steal these 5 tips to keep garland fresh longer indoors throughout the holiday season. The number one thing I use to decorate for Christmas is fresh greenery: garlands, wreaths, branches in vases, sprigs nestled in bowls, and of course, our Christmas tree. It’s delicious scent, authentic look, and old-tyme charm are just a few reasons it’s my favorite. And the number one thing I hear from you guys is that you love fresh greenery, particularly in garland form, but it drys out so darn quickly, looks dead, feels crunchy, and makes a mess. Ugh, I know! Fresh sprigs tend to dry out especially quick when brought inside our cozy, warm houses, with that unforgiving dry air this time of year. Just ask my skin! So what can we do to slow the drying process and help our garlands look less wilty throughout the season? Here are my best defenses against dead-looking garlands: Tip 1: Soak Your Garland or Wreath Before Hanging Essentially, give your greenery a long, cold bath. Put the garland in the tub and fill with enough water to cover the greens. Let soak for 12-24 hours. There’s […]

Party Time! Decorate with this ridiculously easy, cheap and festive DIY party bunting. Sylvia turns two this month, and the week leading up to her birthday, she talked non-stop about her party: the people who were coming and all the ‘treats’ she was going to eat. I wanted to decorate the house to help make her party special and festive, but I didn’t want to spend $$ on decorations that we may never use again. We have a colorful paper stash in my blog room that I use for projects + Sylvie colors on. I have a love/hate with ‘stashes’. I love having materials on hand to craft–or in Sylvie’s case play with–but stashes also just seem to take up space in our small house. So I thought what better way to deplete the stash than make a colorful party bunting? I also have a ginormous spool of baker’s twine leftover from my wedding 6 YEARS AGO, that I swear is bottomless, so I used that to string together the bunting. All in all, I spent zero dollar bills to make this project and man, that feels good! Here’s the video tutorial on how to make the bunting. I hope […]

I’m popping in quickly this weekend to share how to hang garland in your house without permanently nailing it to the wall. This is not sponsored; I’ve just had a lot of questions on my Instagram about how I’ve hung mine, so I thought I’d share what really works. I’ve tried several different hooks that never seemed to be strong enough to hold a full garland. In years past, there were so many mornings, I’d wake up to a sad garland on the floor and cedar flakes everywhere. When I finally discovered temporary hooks that were strong enough for the job, I did a little happy dance. Here’s what we do: We use big daddy 3M Command hooks. The ones that hold up to 7.5 lbs each. They’re damage free and the packaging has a photo of the hook with a step ladder hanging from it, so you know they’re strong! For the arch pictured, we’re using 3 hooks one on each side plus one in the middle. In years where we have an especially full garland, I’ve doubled up the hooks at each location just to be safe, but looking back it was probably overkill! The hooks are […]

I have a handful of Holiday decorations that I look forward to bringing out each year. (We’re big on Scandinavian traditions at this house.) That said, I do also try to add new pieces into the mix each year to keep things fresh and festive. Last year, the cedar archway garland was the main event, and this year, I’ve teamed up with incredibly talented fiber artist, Sara Banner of The Forest Fern, to share a fun and easy project for Holiday decorating. Sara is a devoted macrame + tapestry genius and a wealth of knowledge in all things fiber-related. I’ve been a fan of Sara’s beautiful work for over a year now and was lucky to meet and work with her while she was in Minneapolis last Summer. Together we created a modern tassel garland tutorial for draping across windows, the fireplace mantel and even the Christmas tree. Let’s get tasseling, shall we? Read on for the how-to on this smart, easy project! Materials: Single Strand Cotton String – we used 6mm Black Cotton from Niroma Studio Scissors Hair brush, pet brush or wide toothed comb 3-4 various colors of yarn Thin cotton string (such as baker’s twine) Tapestry needle […]

April showers have ushered in the May flowers, and everything is greening up nicely here in Minneapolis, seemingly overnight. As I’m writing this morning, I’m looking out into the backyard at the flourishing lavender lilac bushes, and I can’t help but be in a good mood because of it! Today’s DIY chandelier garland will hopefully also be a mood lifter as it too involves a big dose of Spring flowers. Spring and summer always seem to be loaded with parties and events: from Mother’s Day to birthdays to wedding season, and when it comes to party decor my favorite thing to decorate with is flowers and greens. The #1 reason why is they make such a beautiful statement without much effort on my behalf. They also make the party space feel festive enough that it’s usually the only form of decoration I really need to do. Enter the Floral Chandelier Garland that I created for Sugar & Cloth. One and done! It’s created simply by making up a series of mini bouquets and attaching them together with floral wire. When you’re ready to hang it, just drape it over the arms of your chandelier and attach the loose ends with […]

Is your place in need of a little refresh for Spring? It’s around this time of year, I start to catch a case of cabin fever. Old Man Winter, you need to wrap this up! So I’ll instinctively start packing up the heavy blankets, moving things around and tackling new home projects to help refresh my surroundings. I think my rearranging our furniture drives Ken a little crazy, but it’s just something I’ve got to do this time of year! It may only be February, but us Northerners spend so much time indoors from October to March, I think the Spring conversion process starts a bit earlier up here out of survival. It’s how we keep our sanity! If you’re in need of a home refresher too, why not move in some plants, hang garland or organize your magazines? Check out the fantastic round-up below!

Last year, Ken and I threw a big New Years Bash with lots of balloons, silly hats and the quintessential NYE noise makers. This year, we’re looking forward to a much more low key evening: a night à la maison with another couple, Cards Against Humanity, and a little champagne to go around. Though we’re taking it easy this year, there’s no harm in doing a little dreaming as to what I would do if we were to host a party, is there? Below is the visual inspiration for the the party I’m throwing…in my dreams, of course. 7. Tassle Garland, 6. Empress Dress + Torch Lake Bib Necklace, 5. Hermes Tray + Bar, 4. Sparkling Moonriver Pumps, 3. Oysters, 2. Mini Pinata Bowties, 1. Sparkler Macarons at Midnight
