A 90’s lakehome gets a breath of fresh air! Come see how the home’s natural landscape served as inspiration for this treehouse living room. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve shared an update on the Treehouse living room, but that’s not to say we haven’t been hard at work. I’m SO excited to show you the loveliness that’s ensued since we’ve last talked! And if you’re sitting there thinking…what the heck is ‘the treehouse’? Then hop over to read “Meet the Treehouse” for the full background scoop! So the Treehouse is my parents full-time residence that our family uses as a cabin as it’s located on a beautiful, quiet lake North of Minneapolis. It’s built on a hill, so the back of the house opens onto 3 different decks surrounded by woods and you feel like you’re up in the trees, hence the name, treehouse! The goal in the living room here was to make this new-to-them place feel more like my parent’s style: lake-inspired, cozy and casual. As you may remember, there were 4 different paint colors happening in this one area alone, each it’s own personal shade of khaki, grey or tan, and there was SO much […]

Meet the Treehouse! Get to know my latest project updating my parent’s late 90’s lake home which we affectionately call, the Treehouse. You may have seen glimpses of The Treehouse on Instagram, but I’ve mostly been mums-the-word because its a project I’ve been working on slowly and surely with my parents. When Ken and I found out we were expecting, my parents starting looking to move from Northern Minnesota down just outside Minneapolis to be closer to their first grand-baby. They settled on a lake 45 minutes north of Minneapolis in a home built in the late 90’s, that we affectionately call ‘The Treehouse’. It’s an incredible location, very wooded and private with 3 decks that overlook the lake and make you feel as though you’re way up in the trees. However, the home itself needs some TLC. The previous owner didn’t keep up on the maintenance over the last 20 years, so my parents have been busy taking care of not-so-glamourous, but oh-so-necessary upgrades (that you cringe to spend $$ on because you don’t actually see or feel them. They’re more behind the scenes.) like repaving the driveway, repairing a leaky roof, replacing rotten windows and doors, etc. ETC. […]

We’ve given one reader’s Minneapolis living room a facelift for Spring! Come see the transformation of this first-ever reader makeover! Today’s the day! It’s reveal day of the first-ever reader makeover I did with interior designer, Tasha Schultz of @tchotchkesdesignstudio ! You might remember we hosted a giveaway contest on Instagram in January and asked local readers to tag their living room spaces with #francoisXtchotch for a chance to win a makeover with a full size Loloi Rug,custom throw pillows, Tchotchkes Design Studio accessories, and professional styling, of course! BEFORE: Our Makeover Winner We had an overwhelming number of entries and it was SO hard to pick, but Terrae’s home was our winner in the end! Terrae, her husband, Jack, their two sweet kiddos, and Italian greyhounds live in South Minneapolis in a charming 1920’s era home. Their living room has such wonderful bones: beautiful hardwood floors, original brick fireplace, nice light grey walls, and neutral charcoal sofa, so our goal was to build on what they already have with layers of texture and color. Above is a look at the living room BEFORE. The Magic Tasha and I showed up at Terrae’s at 10am on makeover day each […]

I’ve been showing you guys pictures of my home for YEARS, so I think it’s high time to share some more video action around here. Copeesh? Photos are beautiful and conceptual, but there’s nothing like moving picture footage to really communicate the true essence of a space. I’m starting with the living room, and will be making my way around the house sharing each room, as well as talking about the layout of our duplex. I don’t know about you, but I’m fascinated by how older homes are laid out–especially duplexes! Let’s kick things off with the living room, shall we? Want to know where something is from? All sources are listed RIGHT HERE and HERE. Make sure to subscribe to my Youtube Channel, so you don’t miss the next room tour!

The number one kind of question I’m asked is ‘Where is that from?’ So, I’ve gotten in the habit of sharing a ‘Get the Look’ post after a room reveal. Today I’ve got the sources for our kid friendly living room makeover for you. At the last minute, I also added a bird’s eye view of the room so it’s easy to understand how the overall room comes together, so I’m also sharing a fly-by-night sketched plan of the room. It’s not to scale, but hopefully it’s legible! If you have questions on anything, leave them in comments, and I’ll do my best to answer them ASAP.

This post is part of a larger series, Francois Renovates. Find the other posts in this series Here, Here & Here. With the Fall hullabaloo of DIY renovating, moving, and then the Holidays, it’s been quite a slow process getting our home set up and settled. To make insult to injury, I can’t just hang something on the wall or go out and buy a piece of furniture because we “need” something there. It has to be the right piece which definitely takes time to find (and drives my husband bonkers!). I’d like to start with the “Before” because who doesn’t love a good Before & After situation? Below are the photos from the listing when we purchased back in July. (Photos courtesy of Zillow.) As you can see, the space is in great shape, but a little gloomy and a few two many competing wood tones for my liking. Living & Dining Room Renovation Reveal: Before & After And now on to the “After.” I snapped all these shots on a whim in late December after I was approached about opening our home for a brand’s photo shoot. I struggle with sharing these just yet, because I don’t feel […]
