A Medicine Cabinet Makeover: Refresh the spot in your home where you begin and end each day. This post was created in partnership with KILZ®. All thoughts and opinions are my own. It’s a new year, and I’m teaming up with KILZ to give a new look for the spot in our house where we start and end each day: the bathroom medicine cabinet. Since this little spot is so deeply embedded into our everyday routine, I figured it was high time to make it prettier and all around more functional for Ken and me. We’re a one bathroom household, so this area gets a lot of play. We used KILZ Tribute Paint & Primer in here not only because of the durability and coverage, but this bathroom doesn’t have an exhaust fan (old school, right?), so moisture and mildew resistance is also a must. Oh AND I wanted a matte finish, and Tribute is one of the most durable matte finish paints available! Let’s take a look at the cabinet before the makeover… Are those dirty, painted white shelves not the grossest thing you’ve ever seen? This makeover is LONG overdue! My scope was to give the cabinet a […]

The number one kind of question I’m asked is ‘Where is that from?’ So, I’ve gotten in the habit of sharing a ‘Get the Look’ post after a room reveal. Today I’ve got the sources for our kid friendly living room makeover for you. At the last minute, I also added a bird’s eye view of the room so it’s easy to understand how the overall room comes together, so I’m also sharing a fly-by-night sketched plan of the room. It’s not to scale, but hopefully it’s legible! If you have questions on anything, leave them in comments, and I’ll do my best to answer them ASAP.

I’m so excited to share our living room with you today because, it’s been a long time in the works! Anyone with kids knows how tough they are on furniture. Sylvie has wreaked far more havoc our sofa in the last 18 months, than we have in the whole 6 years prior to Sylvie’s debut. Here’s a close-up look. There are several stains that we can’t get out. Plus, the synthetic cushions are really starting to smoosh and clump, and I’m CONSTANTLY rotating and fluffing them nearly every day. The pics are super low light because I snapped them as fast as I could the second I saw Ken’s little brother pull up to take the sofa. However, the cherry on this jacked-up-sofa-sundae is the ganging device (the thing that joins the two sofa pieces together) is broken, so the chaise and loveseat slide apart as you’re sitting on it. Suffice it to say we’ve got to do something. We’re a one “hang-out space” household so the living room is the spot for both kids to play and adults to hang out. I know it’s easy to get sucked into buying cheap, ugly furniture, because you think your kids will […]

If you follow on Instagram, then you know I don’t share a lot about our bedroom. The truth is, until recently I haven’t been able to figure out how to pull things together in here. This room has hung out half done for months, and it wasn’t until just recently that they started to fall into place. Sometimes l feel like I’m so immersed in my own home that I can’t see it objectively–do you ever feel this way? Let’s talk about the bones of the space. The footprint is tiny (13′ x 10′)–gotta love 1930’s homes! The carpet has to stay (ugh) as the previous owner laid asbestos tile OVER the beautiful hardwoods making them toxic to remove. Especially since our home is a duplex, legally as the owner, we can’t make changes that could have negative health impacts for our tenant upstairs, nor would we want to (horrible flooring, no matter!). Also, there are two closets in this room, which is great and pretty unusual for this era home, but in a small room, 3 doorways + a double window really tends to shake things up in terms of bed/furniture placement. Last June, I scored this metal bedframe […]

Pretending my back hall isn’t an absolute crap-hole (pardon my French!) has gone on long enough. I’m finally ready to make this tiny, forgotten entry more functional and all-around prettier with paint, wainscoting, and functional accessories. Today is a visual teaser of the plan of action for the makeover. Check back next week (or stay up-to-date on Instagram) for the the full plan, DIY process, and reveal. Whew! I’m exhausted just typing the words. I have a lot of work to do in the meantime, but–spoiler alert!– it’s going to be a doozy!

Today is the big day! We’ve been working hard to renovate the nursery and after several weeks I’m excited and relieved to say it’s done. And just in the nick of time might I add: our due date is less than 2 weeks away! At the beginning of this process, I had no idea what I wanted this space to look like, only that I wanted it to feel Nordic, fun and playful, a space that might spark imagination and foster creativity. When we found out we were having a girl, I have to admit my mind immediately went towards the color pink: girly pink with white and neutrals. But the more visual research I did on Pinterest, the more I came to the realization that Ken and I don’t even really like the color pink. And we all know the baby doesn’t have a preference what her room looks like yet, so why not create a space that we’ll enjoy spending long hours rocking our little one to sleep in. Let’s kick things off with what this room looked like BEFORE, shall we? For the full renovation diary check out these Francois Renovates posts: The Before || The Concept […]

On the coattails of yesterday’s big reveal, I wanted to breakdown what specific pieces we used to achieve the overall look. There were a few accessories that I DIY’ed myself, like the pink floor mirror, Ikat lumbar pillow, message board and indigo-dyed shams, but most everything else is shoppable. I also tried really hard only to include links to the EXACT accessories you see in the reveal. The only exceptions to this are a few of the DIY’ed pieces and the insanely gorgeous, one of a kind vintage rug from Woven Abode. In this case, I linked to the most similar rug available. Where to Find Everything: A. Murphy Bed | B. Tall Shelf | C. Gold Vase | D. Alarm Clock | E. Woven Basket | F.

See how we created a guestroom within our office using a murphy bed. Click for the full before & after! Baby Girl Francois is well on her way to taking over our current guestroom come February, and with 3 bedrooms in our home: our bedroom, my office/studio, and the soon-to-be-nursery, we had to figure out a way to accommodate overnight guests comfortably without resorting to our living room sofa (our only sofa) as the royal sleeping chambers. After much ‘what-the-heck-are-we-going-to-do-with-our-guest-bed-situation?‘ discussion, Ken and I concluded that our only real option was to add a bed to my current office and turn it into a multi-use space by re-configuring the layout. I tossed in the idea of doing a murphy bed, because I had one in my tiny first apartment post-college, and they’re such a smart space saver. The way it folds up into itself when not in use, giving me nearly the same amount of space in my office to work on large projects as I originally had, was just too tempting to pass up! It’s no secret that big projects like these can get messy: from parts and pieces scattered everywhere throughout the house to fugitive dust bunnies unearthing […]

There are a ton of changes that take place when you’re expecting. Major physical changes, extra dietary requirements, and feeling a bit up-in-the-clouds spacey (it’s true!), to name a few. So far, I’ve been rolling with all of it, and then my sleep pattern began to change, and I started becoming restless at night, mostly from having to sleep on my side. I’ve always been a great sleeper, so when things started to go downhill, I decided we needed to do something about it. We need all the sleep we can get before this bébé arrives! Our bedroom was one of the spaces in our home that didn’t get a ton of love when we moved in about a year ago. We pretty much plopped our furniture in place and focused on the more immediate changes we needed to make elsewhere in the home, a.k.a. the kitchen. However, now that we’re expecting, I spend more time in our bedroom, and want to make it a cozy space conducive to sleep. With a nursery and guestroom redesign already underway, our bedroom updates didn’t come in the form of paint and carpet removal (which is on the honey-do list for someday). Instead, […]
