This last minute little pillow project came about as I sat down in the rocker one night taking in the progress we’d made in the nursery and while sitting there I noticed we needed a lumbar pillow for a little extra support in the lower back. The next day I started ideating what the pillow might look like and I remembered that right about the time we found out we were expecting, I had stumbled upon this beautiful baby swimsuit from Ox Eyed Baiby on Pinterest and fell in love with the yellow and white contrast, the lace, the handmade feel…all of it. I remembered being bummed at the time because the swimsuit was one of a kind, and no longer available. But now! 8 months later, it was the perfect inspiration for my lumbar pillow. It’s funny how inspiration works sometimes, isn’t it? The technique for the pillow applique is really quite simple. It’s just a matter of cutting apart the lace, arranging the design on the pillow, and tacking it in place with needle and thread. The most difficult part is probably deciding how to place and space apart the lace! Read on for the full tutorial… Materials: […]

Ah, behold the latent design power of the throw pillow. AKA soft little squares (or in this case, circles) of goodness that can single-handedly change the feeling or direction of a room, spark conversation, or soften an otherwise uninviting chair or nook. Yes folks, they’re magic when it comes to interior decor which is why they’re the easy answer to updating your space just enough to cure the restless, “I’m sick of my house” cabin fever that inevitably sets in this time of year. And if ever there were a pillow up to the task of stealing the spotlight and diverting attention away from the rest of your home, its this little wool beaded trim pillow you can make in an afternoon. Now if you’re really feeling adventurous, you can make your own felt beads, but I picked mine up here because, TIME. The rest of the materials I found at the fabric/craft store. Head over to Sugar & Cloth to find my full tutorial! Think this post is worth a read? Please share the love!

This beautiful silk Ikat dress from Jcrew has been hanging, unworn at the back of my closet since about 2011. I haven’t worn it in years because it’s a bit too small nowadays, and it’s a strapless dress that doesn’t have support in the bodice, a.k.a. it tends to fall down when worn. All this, and I still really and truly adore this dress, so I haven’t been able to bring myself to get rid of it. Call it nesting or call it “you need to pair down and make room your baby arriving in February,” either way, I recently came to the mental clarity that I needed to either do something with this dress, try to sell, or donate it. Enough is enough. When I really started to psycho-analyze why I loved this dress so much, it wasn’t the dress style for aforementioned reasons. It was the fabric. Blue and white silk classic Ikat. Yes in every language. Thus the idea of turning it into a simple envelope pillow was born. If like me, you also have a skirt or dress that you no longer wear, but love the fabric so much, can’t bear to get rid of, then […]

I’ve long loved the Mexican Otomi pattern, but authentic Otomi is ex-pen-sive. And for good reason too. It’s hand hand-crafted, hand-embroidered, and stunningly beautiful. Unfortunately, authentic Otomi is just not in the stars for the Francois Fam right now, so using a big stencil, a little paint, and some plain pillow covers, I’ve created Otomi pillows for our home at a fraction of the cost! Originally, I had planned to use the pillows in our backyard, but now that they’re done, I kind of want to keep them inside! So here’s the skinny on the stencil. The largest otomi stencil I could find (before the price more than doubled) was 17″ x 17″. You guys know how I feel about small pillows–anything smaller than 20″, and they’re just really wimpy looking and it makes me sad. So, in trying to balance the cost of the project and my hate for tiny pillows, I decided to use 20″ pillow covers and still use the 17″ stencil. But instead of stenciling the entire design and ending up with a pattern that ends before it reaches the edges of the pillows, I chose not to stencil in the entire design, and instead, centered […]
