I’m a sucker for a quirky, little [insert object here]. The kind of pieces with personality–ones that make the room, just by embracing their flaws, asymmetry, oddly tiny scale, etc. I think it’s these unusual pieces that give rooms/homes personality, approchability and charm. I initially made this quirky little stool for my back hall. I wanted a little corner spot to sit down and tie shoes or set a heavy grocery bag on. The original idea was to use 1″ thick wood dowels and attach them to the top with hangar bolts/angled plates. It ended up being a bit of a Pinterest fail–it was really tough to get the hangar bolts super straight in the end of the wood dowels and because of that the legs weren’t very stable. Below is a shot of that version of the stool, where you can see it’s crooked. I actually really like with the fact that it’s crooked, but being unstable, no one could really sit or set anything on it. It was just taking up space. I think it’s these unusual pieces that give rooms/homes personality, approchability and charm. I decided to switch to pre-made legs that came with a hangar bolt […]

Is your place in need of a little refresh for Spring? It’s around this time of year, I start to catch a case of cabin fever. Old Man Winter, you need to wrap this up! So I’ll instinctively start packing up the heavy blankets, moving things around and tackling new home projects to help refresh my surroundings. I think my rearranging our furniture drives Ken a little crazy, but it’s just something I’ve got to do this time of year! It may only be February, but us Northerners spend so much time indoors from October to March, I think the Spring conversion process starts a bit earlier up here out of survival. It’s how we keep our sanity! If you’re in need of a home refresher too, why not move in some plants, hang garland or organize your magazines? Check out the fantastic round-up below! Copper Himmeli Table | Wood Bead Garland | X-Shaped Magazine Rack | Easy Planter Upgrades | Wall Mounted Air Plants Give Your Home a Spring Decor Refresh with These DIY Projects Find more in the DIY du Jour series here!

As you guys know, I’m a DIY contributor for Homedit, and they’re pretty flexible about the project topics I write for them. Often I pitch projects that I personally need or have been wanting to add to my own home, because I always feel I do my best work when I’m personally excited about the project. This concrete planter is no different. We’re approaching that time of year here in Minnesota when we’ve seen just about enough snow, and are more than ready to welcome Spring with open arms. It’s likely though we’ll be trudging through snow for another month, so if we want to see green, we’ve got to take matters into our own hands. So here I am with this DIY minimal concrete planter project to help usher in the greenery. Here’s hoping it’ll tide us over until Lady Spring gets here. Scroll down for the tutorial link! Usher Spring into Your Home with this Concrete Planter Find the whole skinny on this planter project over at Homedit! Find more of my Homedit projects here!

Hey! There’s a long weekend coming up, and at our place that usually means an opportunity to work on projects à la maison. Luckily, there’s nothing pressing like installing a new exterior storm door in 0º weather, totally re-plumbing our tenants bathroom (we hired this one out, thank goodness), or trouble-shooting on the washing machine that doesn’t seem to want to wash. (Yes, all those things have come up in the last 3 weeks. So not glamorous, but definitely part of home/duplex ownership!) In any case, I’ve been scouting some fun, aesthetically satisfying DIY’s du jour to sink my teeth into this weekend. Here are a few lovely ones that have floated to the top. Happy weekending! Furry Stool | Hello Sign | Muuto Dots | Hairpin Plant Stand | Agate Coasters 5 DIY’s du Jour for The Home Follow
