Despite concerted efforts at cultivating a green thumb, I’ve never quite been able to unlock the mystery of houseplants. So thank goodness I married a man with an innate (rugged, but nurturing) ability to keep plants green. Though I may not get a gold star in raising plants, I do quite love scheming up cool ways to house the plants my husband grows. Most recently, I DIY’ed a mid mod planter for a mini-palm that was sitting homeless in our living room. And it was as simple as stacking two Target bowls on top of one another (and adhering them together of course!). I LOVE this planter for it’s Mid Century simplicity, and the modern platform it creates for the mini palm! The two bowls I used were this one & this one . Hop over to Sugar & Cloth for the full tutorial! And don’t forget to pin this project for later! Dig this DIY and want more?

As you guys know, I’m a DIY contributor for Homedit, and they’re pretty flexible about the project topics I write for them. Often I pitch projects that I personally need or have been wanting to add to my own home, because I always feel I do my best work when I’m personally excited about the project. This concrete planter is no different. We’re approaching that time of year here in Minnesota when we’ve seen just about enough snow, and are more than ready to welcome Spring with open arms. It’s likely though we’ll be trudging through snow for another month, so if we want to see green, we’ve got to take matters into our own hands. So here I am with this DIY minimal concrete planter project to help usher in the greenery. Here’s hoping it’ll tide us over until Lady Spring gets here. Scroll down for the tutorial link! Usher Spring into Your Home with this Concrete Planter Find the whole skinny on this planter project over at Homedit! Find more of my Homedit projects here!

As a professional fashion artist and amateur portrait painter, my Grandma Annie loved to study human faces. She was fascinated by each one’s unique details, their asymmetry, and the way in which the features join together to form a whole. We lost her to a merciless bout of cancer earlier this year, but I still think about her everyday. She was a strong influence for me in igniting my love for arts and crafts, not only through her words of encouragement, but also through her own creative pursuits. Inspired by Mrs. Annabelle and her love of facial features, I created these Pretty Face Seedling Cups as a way to start my herbs inside until it’s warm enough to move them onto our balcony. The egg cups are the perfect vessel for A.) a little face and B.) growing seedlings. Just make sure you use small rocks at the bottom of each cup for drainage. Materials: egg cups, black oil-based paint pen, translucent satin acrylic paint in color Pink Hyacinth, 3/4″ paint dauber 1. Use a fine-tipped, oil-based paint pen to freehand two 1/2″ wide eyelid shapes, followed by the eyelashes. If desired, ornament the egg cup further with a “beaded […]

I was first introduced to African Mudcloth 3 years ago when Design Sponge featured a hometour with a chair gloriously upholstered in it. I really didn’t know anything about African Mudcloth (including that it was called mudcloth!) until recently when I discovered that it’s actually made with mud! Say what?! The graphic lines, the hand-drawn quality, and the ever so handsome black and white fit in so well with almost any interior. I like it especially paired the the oh-so pretty botanicals that we’re seeing right now. I’ve got another project coming up with an actual mudcloth inspired textile, but I thought I’d first create a home for my new little cactus with these fun and simple mudcloth-inspired planters. Materials: Small Planter, Black Chalkboard Paint, White Chalkboard Pen, “White Pure” Fine Acrylic Paint Pen 1. Start with a matte black pot. Mine was originally white, so I gave it a coat of chalkboard black spray paint to achieve the matte black look. 2. Pull up an image of mudcloth patterning you’d like to emulate, or use my pot as a guide. Begin mapping out your pattern with a wipeable chalk paint pen. The chalk pen is handy, because if you […]
