Despite concerted efforts at cultivating a green thumb, I’ve never quite been able to unlock the mystery of houseplants. So thank goodness I married a man with an innate (rugged, but nurturing) ability to keep plants green. Though I may not get a gold star in raising plants, I do quite love scheming up cool ways to house the plants my husband grows. Most recently, I DIY’ed a mid mod planter for a mini-palm that was sitting homeless in our living room. And it was as simple as stacking two Target bowls on top of one another (and adhering them together of course!). I LOVE this planter for it’s Mid Century simplicity, and the modern platform it creates for the mini palm! The two bowls I used were this one & this one . Hop over to Sugar & Cloth for the full tutorial! And don’t forget to pin this project for later! Dig this DIY and want more? Check out all my Sugar & Cloth contributor projects here! Follow

Yep, this bag is made from a rug. This killer (and affordable!) rug to be exact. I made myself a carpet bag because A. I think carpet bags are dope, and B. Every year I end up toting my Holiday gifts to gatherings in disposable plastic bags, and every year I think what a shame it is that the gifts I spent so much time wrapping up with pretty paper and ribbon make their way to their intended giftee in a lack luster plastic grocery bag. No more! Not this year. I saw this Nate Berkus rug at Target, instantly loved the pattern, and knew it would make a great carpet bag. I had fun with this project because since you don’t cut the rug edges, there are no raveling yarns to wrastle with. Just hand sew up the sides, add a handle and boom. Done! Scoot over to SheKnows for the full tutorial and tote your gifts in style this year! Follow

Typically you’ll find me behind the lens, rather than in front of it, but every once in awhile it’s fun to mix up the handmade posts with a lifestyle one here and there. I LOVE making things, but now that the weather is warming up, I just want to get outside and explore Minneapolis. We moved to the North Loop in October last year, just as Winter was also moving in, so I’m excited to explore the Neighborhood in all its warm-weather glory. On Saturday we moseyed over to the Farmer’s Market, so I’m sharing my spring style weekend wear with you guys. I hope you had a fantastic weekend–they always go too fast, don’t they? First and foremost, I’m really digging espadrilles for spring and summer. Often I don’t like ankle ties because they can cut into your ankles, but the ties on these babies (find them here!) are a twill cotton and they’re actually quite comfortable, so they’re great for strolling around the farmer’s market. If your mission is to stock up on fresh, local produce for the week, then a big bag to corral it all is essential. Otherwise, the vendors give you plastic bags for each […]

I came across this floor mirror on Pinterest, and fell in love with the unique simplicity of its Scandinavian design. Of course, I couldn’t help but figure out how to DIY one for our place, and in the end, we put our own spin on it by using a fun and retro coral color. Our place is quite white and neutral, so I’ve been feeling lately like we could use a little color in our lives. Problem solved! Hope you have a great start to the week! Materials: Hand held compact router fitted with the inclusive edge guard + 1/8″ drill bit Spray Paint Door Mirror: $5.99 at Target! Duct Tape Industrial strength adhesive Two unfinished handrails cut down to 6′ – Home Depot sells the rails by the foot in their store. We chose to use handrails with one one flat side vs. a round wood dowel in order to use the flat side as a guide when routing the mirror slits. 1. Save yourself the time and trouble when you purchase your wood hand-railings, and ask the hardware store to cut them down to 6′ feet long in the store for you. 2. Spray paint the handrails the […]

I’m a huge fan of mixing black and white geometrics with subtle blush tones in an otherwise light and airy white interior. There’s something that feels so fresh and feminine, yet grounded about the whole combination. I was making a Target run recently, and took a lap through their new home section [which btw is totally styled, curated and straight up awesome] and came across a fantastic black and white Kilim-inspired table runner. Ken and I are not table-runner-people, but I liked it so much, I bought it anyway with this idea of making a long lumbar pillow for our bed. The black and white pattern was the perfect juxtaposition to our blush pillow cases and the fringe at each end of the table runner easily serve as the brush trim on the pillow ends. Here’s the tutorial on how I made the pillow in case you want to make one for your own home. And P.S. the table runner is on SALE at Target right now, so why not?! Materials: Table runner roughly 72″ x 14″. I used this one from Target! Sewing Machine fitted with a denim (heavy duty) needle. Sewing Pins Coordinating thread Hand-sewing needle Long ruler or measuring tape Scissors Down feathers from a 26″ x 26″ Ikea pillow […]

Something I really wanted in our new place was a pair of sconces flanking our bed. Not only do I love their minimalist look, but they also don’t take up space on the nightstand. And when living in a small space every. inch. counts. There are several stunning options out there…and not a one of them fit our budget, so I took to Pinterest to figure out if there was a way I could make the sconces I was envisioning, but for less cash money. Finding inspiration in DIY sconces from Vintage Revival and Poppytalk, I used the accordion arm from Ikea’s Frack Mirror in combination with the lamp head from Target’s Wood Pole Scholar Desk Lamp (Just wait ’till you see what I have in mind for the base from this lamp–stay tuned!) And then I painted everything gold. Because, well, I heart gold. The best part? Each sconce came together for right around $20 bucks! Materials List: Ikea Frack Accordion Mirror – Use the accordion arm only. Target Stick Table Lamp – Loosen the screw on the lamp head to slide it off the wood pole base. Metallic gold spray paint Painter’s tape Plastic bag Drop cloth 5″ of elastic (1″ to 1-1/2″ thick) Gorilla Glue (Gorilla Glue expands as it dries, […]

Happy Friday to you! Today I’m sharing a few tips and ideas for putting together a long distance housewarming care package. My sister, Sarah, just wrapped up her PhD in Conservation Ecology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and accepted a post-doc position with the University of South Florida. So last week she packed everything she owned into her Toyota Rav-4, and road-tripped her way down to Tampa Bay. Talk about a big life moment! I so wish I could have flown down to help her set up her new place, but between our trip abroad and our most recent jaunt to Alaska, it just wasn’t in the stars for me, so I put together a care package of things to help her feel at home and sent it down to her. My sister and I are very different creatures. She’s a science nerd and I’m a design nut. And our differences in how we think and who we are is something I really appreciate about our relationship. Since our styles are quite polar, when pulling the care package together, I tried to keep her style in mind, and when in doubt, I stuck to universal home essentials that everyone might find useful–this way I couldn’t go wrong! Here’s […]
