Nordic meets Mid-Century meets eclectic in the Treehouse master bedroom. See how we went from gloomy + rustic to light + serene! Big Day TODAY! The master bedroom at the Treehouse is done, and spoiler alert: It’s beautiful!! If you’re just tuning in, read up on the design plan and progress update posts. We went from rustic and gloomy, (below was how the seller had the space set up) to bright and serene, using the home’s natural landscape as our inspiration guide. My amazing parents have been so patient and helpful amidst the chaos. (Thanks mom and dad!) Now that’s done, let’s dive into the deets! We grounded the room with a big, gorgeous rug from Loloi. This is the 8×10 Loren/Terracotta Sky. The rug is printed, though it has so much depth, you’d never know it unless you studied it. And $745 for an 8×10 rug can’t be beat! My dad sanded his life away on the two doors (bathroom and main door) to take off the honey oak finish and seal them with a clear water based poly to match the new patio door. (We had to replace the old one as it was leaking water into the […]

A status update on the progress we’re making in the Treehouse master bedroom: updating doors, paint, and prepping for drapery! We’ve been hard at work in the master bedroom, and though this post is not filled with pretty pictures just yet, (we’ll get to the good stuff in about 2 weeks!) we’re making great progress. And that’s worth celebrating! If you’re just tuning in, come see our design plan here! New patio doors are installed, and walls are painted! The paint color is Night Blooming Jasmine from Behr. Eventually we’re replacing all flooring in the house, but for now it’s staying put. The bathroom and hallway doors are honey oak so my dad has been feverishly sanding them down to expose the natural wood tone to match the patio door. Then we’ll finish them up with a matte water-based poly. We’re going to do DIY pinch pleat draperies on the patio doors. Mom’s working hard on these! The Grit & Polish has an awesome tutorial on how to execute them (Thank you Cathy!). We’re using lined, drapery, (Vilborg) from Ikea, and using these pleat clips and these curtain rings. Next up, trim is going on, lighting’s going up, and furniture’s […]

Updating a dated builder home can pose quite the conundrum. Come see our plan for transforming the Treehouse’s master bedroom. Spoiler: it’s gonna be good! Since wrapping up the Treehouse living room we’ve turned our sights to the master bedroom, and I couldn’t be more excited. Truthfully, I forgot to snap pictures of the room once my parents had moved in, so here is the room staged for the seller’s listing. The Room As you guys know, the house is built on a hill and has three decks in back that look out on lake and forest. The master bedroom is lucky enough to open out onto one of those three decks! The room is a nice size, with great vaulted ceilings and lots of natural light coming though the doors. The wall color is ok, but this room feels gloomy even on sunny days, there are these cheapo sconces that flank the bed and don’t get me started on the 1/2 drapery rod (??). LOL. The previous owner had the bed on the wall opposite the doors so you could potentially lay in bed and take in the view. In theory it works, but in reality, the room just […]

A 90’s lakehome gets a breath of fresh air! Come see how the home’s natural landscape served as inspiration for this treehouse living room. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve shared an update on the Treehouse living room, but that’s not to say we haven’t been hard at work. I’m SO excited to show you the loveliness that’s ensued since we’ve last talked! And if you’re sitting there thinking…what the heck is ‘the treehouse’? Then hop over to read “Meet the Treehouse” for the full background scoop! So the Treehouse is my parents full-time residence that our family uses as a cabin as it’s located on a beautiful, quiet lake North of Minneapolis. It’s built on a hill, so the back of the house opens onto 3 different decks surrounded by woods and you feel like you’re up in the trees, hence the name, treehouse! The goal in the living room here was to make this new-to-them place feel more like my parent’s style: lake-inspired, cozy and casual. As you may remember, there were 4 different paint colors happening in this one area alone, each it’s own personal shade of khaki, grey or tan, and there was SO much […]

Meet the Treehouse! Get to know my latest project updating my parent’s late 90’s lake home which we affectionately call, the Treehouse. You may have seen glimpses of The Treehouse on Instagram, but I’ve mostly been mums-the-word because its a project I’ve been working on slowly and surely with my parents. When Ken and I found out we were expecting, my parents starting looking to move from Northern Minnesota down just outside Minneapolis to be closer to their first grand-baby. They settled on a lake 45 minutes north of Minneapolis in a home built in the late 90’s, that we affectionately call ‘The Treehouse’. It’s an incredible location, very wooded and private with 3 decks that overlook the lake and make you feel as though you’re way up in the trees. However, the home itself needs some TLC. The previous owner didn’t keep up on the maintenance over the last 20 years, so my parents have been busy taking care of not-so-glamourous, but oh-so-necessary upgrades (that you cringe to spend $$ on because you don’t actually see or feel them. They’re more behind the scenes.) like repaving the driveway, repairing a leaky roof, replacing rotten windows and doors, etc. ETC. […]
