Playroom Progress! Learn how to install wallpaper the easy way by pasting the wall, not the paper. Plus take away ideas for customizing ‘big box’ furniture! I’ve been working feverishly behind the scenes on the play room, and I’m excited to share where we’re at so far! You may remember we freshened the upstairs with paint last year when our tenant moved out, and now we’re adding functionality (& fun!) to the den, a small space just off our family room, turning it into a play space for the kids. This is a robust blog post packed with details on the playroom design direction, as well as a full tutorial on how to install unpasted wallpaper. Towards the bottom of the post, you’ll find ideas for modifying inexpensive furniture for a custom look. Here’s a look at the playroom’s design direction. Last summer I stenciled a harlequin rug for this room, and it’s definitely sticking around. We’re also adding a subtle stripe wallcovering to the window wall. Since this is a small space where we have a large bold pattern on the floor and lots of colorful toys on their way, we’re keeping the wallpaper accent wall (eye level pattern) […]

Last Fall, I joined forces with a group of local, Minnesotan DIY’ers, Projects in Person, Construction2Style, & ReBuildMN to host a DIY Crash Course Night where we demystified the fine art of four home DIY skills: Drywall, Tile, Shiplap and Wallpaper Installation. Each of us polled their social media audience to find out what they wanted to learn most, and the general consensus from you guys was that you wanted to learn wallpaper installation. I was really excited to hear this because wallpaper is going through an absolute renaissance at the moment. There are so many new types and styles that the options for transforming your space with wallpaper are seemingly endless. Milton & King generously supplied the wallpaper, Pattern: Origami/Black, and we went to town installing it on several 3′ x 3′ faux walls that my husband, Ken, and I built for the event. I started each session with an installation demonstration, and then we broke into pairs to practice hanging a strip ourselves. The reason I chose to demonstrate Milton & King Wallpaper for this event is it’s great for wallpaper novices. Their wallpaper backing is dimensionally stable meaning it won’t stretch when you apply the adhesive, so […]

Amidst our nursery redesign, I spent an embarrassing amount of time looking for Nordic wallpapers. I knew we wanted to take the nursery in a Scandinavian direction, and wallpaper is just such an easy way to introduce it. As you probably have seen, we chose Nethercote from Hygge & West for our nursery. Though the design is “technically” English-inspired, it still feels very Nordic, and it’s honestly the PERFECT paper for Sylvia’s room. If you’re also looking to add a little Nordic accent to your home, hopefully I can save you some precious Pinterest surfing time by rounding up the papers I fell in love along the way… a.

Uffda! I feel like we’ve made leaps and bounds of progress in the nursery recently. I’m going to walk through the board & batten progress today with still photos, but make sure to check out the video at the bottom for more real time views of the space! Once the drywall had been patched and sanded, Ken started in on the board and batten. There are a million great board and batten tutorials out there, so I’m not going to walk through the entire DIY, but here’s the gist. This tutorial and this tutorial were especially helpful in determining general board sizes and spacing. 1. First we attached 1/8″ thick 4′ x 8′ MDF to the wall with a nail gun. The overall height of the panels is 54″ which we chose specifically to time out with the mid-section of our double-hung windows. At this point, it’s wise to prime your MDF. We didn’t do this and wish we had. Once the boards are attached, it’s harder to cover every little corner with primer. 2. Next we attached the batten over top of the MDF sheeting. The vertical batten spacing varied from 16-17″ on center depending on the length of […]

Friday, glorious Friday, I’m so glad you’re here! After being out of town the past 4 weekends, I’m really looking forward to playing catch up on a few projects at home that have taken the back seat to, well, life. It’s safe to say the weekend can’t get here fast enough. Anyone else feel the same? If you’re looking for some weekend reading (or crafting) material, I have a new DIY tutorial, an origami hanging lamp made from wallpaper, up over at Homedit.
